Riad Hikaya

largepool

Riad Hikaya is a luxury boutique hotel located in the royal quarter of the medina, called the ‘Kasbah’, and only an easy walk from the main square, Jemaa al Fnaa, and the city’s other famous landmarks.

It took three years of meticulous restoration by local craftsmen and artisans, employing both age old techniques and materials, to transform the Riad into what it is today. The harmonious blend of ancient tradition and contemporary comforts, coupled with our emphasis on quality and personal service, will create for guests an unforgettable and unique experience.

Riad Hikaya -’hikaya’ meaning ‘story’ in Arabic – offers seven double bedrooms, all ensuite, and all handcrafted to the highest possible standards of comfort and elegance.
The Riad’s pool is heated all year round and the roof top jacuzzi, cloaked in a bedouin tent for added intimacy, soothes aching limbs after a hard days shopping in the souqs. Guests are encouraged to pamper themselves in our hammam – steam bath – and let Laila, our in house masseuse, give them a traditional moroccan massage using natural products.
The two roof terraces, planted with orange, lemon, grapefruit and pomegranate trees, offer superb, open views onto the snow-capped Atlas mountains. Guests can enjoy a leisurely, sun lit breakfast. Sunbathe under a clear blue African sky. Or relax in the cool shade of the caidale pergolas. As evening falls, prepare to dine as the sun sets to the accompaniment of the evening call for prayer. The choice is all yours.

Our friendly staff – Maryame, Lubna, Fatima, Laila and Lahsen – will do all they can to ensure that any stay with us is unforgettable. We hope that your time at the Riad will leave you with a ‘ hikaya ‘ (story) to tell.

Perle D’Eau

Riad Perle Eau Essaouira

Perle d’eau is a well presented and charming Riad in Essaouira with large rooms and a spacious atmosphere throughout the riad, rarely found so abundantly in Essaouira. The multilingual and dynamic owners of Riad Perle d’Eau who live in Essaouira are very welcoming and have created a wonderfully relaxing environment and atmosphere throughout Perle d’Eau.

Perle d’Eau has 2 roof terraces one set back from the other, but both with beautiful uninterrupted views of the quieter north western coastline of the medina, away from the busier main beach in Essaouira which makes for a wonderful pre evening meal aperitif, or relaxing day to bask in the sun safely protected from the strongest winds coming off the ocean. The terrace has a jacuzzi which works very well complimenting the spacious massage room, with two beds, and accompanying hammam where you can enjoy the best of Morocco at the beautiful Perle d’eau.

Three of the suites provide breathtaking views of sunset and the Atlantic which laps at the base of Riad Perle d’Eau. Rooms possess some beautiful additions throughout that create an impressive and truly relaxing atmosphere, making staying in this boutique hotel feel extra special. Rarely found in traditional Essaouira, double glazing in the ocean view suites provides a welcoming cosy atmosphere uninterrupted by the busy ocean below.

The ground floor patio is large and open with different seating options, some more intimate than others. Stone carved arches invite the old Medina wall into Perle d’Eau in a well crafted and very tasteful way.

The staff at Riad Perle d’Eau are very attentive and can provide you with a very tasteful and locals insight into getting the most out of Essaouira and ensuring your travel to Morocco exceeds your expectations and them some.

Kasbah Angour

angouCreated with passion and a genuine love of the Atlas Mountains and the adventurous hilly Morocco, Kasbah Angour has been painstakingly yet meticulously constructed over a period of 5 years from the origin of sourcing a natural alpine water source to supply the Kasbah to the beautifully pruned gardens and personal service, Kasbah Angour is a Riad in the Atlas Mountains that provides a peaceful sanctuary to all those privileged to stay.

Crafted out of materials found a few meters from its location, plus solar panels for heating, Kasbah Angour is an ecological haven. The mortar for the local stoned walls has been taken from the nearby riverbed constructed perfectly into semi dry stonewalls.

Kasbah Angour has 22 bedrooms and 3 suites, all with panoramic views. The bedrooms and suites are constructed from traditional Moroccan materials: walls in local red sandstone; floors in hand made clay tiles from Meknes; windows and doors in cedar wood from the Middle Atlas Mountains; ceilings in wood and cane or plaster with sculpted cornices. The locally made furniture has Berber motifs. Comfort has not been overlooked. All of the bedrooms and suites have under-floor heating, air conditioning, telephone and free wireless internet. In addition, the suites have bars with countertop, fridge and sink. Most of the beds can be made up as two singles or one king size double.

The building of Kasbah Angour have been designed, along with underfloor heating, to retain heat in the winter, yet shed it in the hotter summer months leaving the property quite suitable and confortable throughout the calendar year. As much tradition has been kept as possible, with ceilings composed of bamboo and eucalyptus poles as has been so effective and necessary in age old Berber craft.

The onsite allotments at Kasbah Angour source the kitchen with daily fresh produce, all organic and understood upon tasting the wonderful and varied menu from the large restaurant area or café with optional seating inside and out.

A well located property, Kasbah Angour is at the gateway to several mountain trekking routes plus local Berber villages and only a 30 minute drive from the great city of Marrakech, also visible at the base of the gorge from Kasbah Angour on a clear day.

Located 10 minutes walk from and breathtakingly looking down over the centre of Imlil, Riad Douar Samra is accessed by walking through the small and very traditional Berber village of Tamatert passing the numerous quaint mud, clay and straw houses, laughing children play gracefully with chickens and sticks as the Berber women hang out their ornate carpets aloft their humble homes.

Douar Samra is quite simply stunning, styled on a quaint rickety European cottage, half the property is solely run on candle light.

To add to the charm of Douar Samra, Fatima is one of the best Riad chefs in Morocco, producing course after course of the most flavorful, humbly well presented and traditional Berber cuisine available, and always with a welcoming smile.

Douar Samra is a Riad in the Atlas Mountains with its own small farm, with animals and allotments supplying Douar Samra with the freshest, most ecological of produce possible. Home to 4 beautiful and friendly Shiz Tzu dogs, creates a wonderfully relaxing and charming atmosphere at Douar Samra.

The bedrooms at Douar Samra are petite, cosy and very well constructed with slightly more modern décor in the rooms out of the main building and more rustic crooked rooms in the main building, but all beautifully homely, making guests feel at home throughout.

There are a diverse collection of communal seating areas of Douar Samra both open and intimate, all offering wonderful views of the High Atlas Mountains and valley of Imlil below in a cosy homely atmosphere.

The Kasbah Bab Ourika has a total of fifteen rooms and suites. In 2011, it was awarded the Fodders Top one hundred hotels of the World, which is an amazing achievement. Kasbah Bab Ourika is perched majestically on a hilltop at the apex of the Ourika Valley, guarding the gateway to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and yet is less than 1 hour from Marrakech’s International airport. With 360 degree panoramic views, this innovative new hotel receives warm sunlight all day, ending in spectacular sunsets, and from its unique eyrie-like position offers a birds eye view of the Atlas, traditional Berber villages and the lush river valley below.

The Kasbah has been constructed principally in rammed earth, the traditional Berber building technique. This method ensures environmentally sound insulation which takes away the need for energy intensive appliances such as airconditioning. The Kasbah’s hot water supply is heated by solar panels and there is a programme established to generate its own electricity and to assist the community with projects funded by the hotel for the benefit of local schools and villages.

Guests can relax in individually decorated rooms with stunning terraces and views, or by the swimming pool in the Kasbah’s magnificent hill top gardens. Darhani, which means “house of tranquillity” is located in a nice area near the Rue de Bacha with its antique and jewellery shops. The Darhani riad is a few minutes walk from the souks, the Ben Medersa and Musee de Marrakech.

Darhani is exceptional in that, although it has only four bedrooms, it has three sitting rooms and an amazing tented terrace, as well as a dining room.

At the Darhani we offer a vegetarian menu for both lunch and dinner service, and have an excellent cook (Khadija). Breakfast is included, and varies each day. We have an English speaking manager who can organise tour guides, excursions and book restaurants for you.

Riad Porte Royale

Riad Porte Royale, Riad Marrakech Morocco

Stylish Riad Porte Royale is set in the spiritual heart of the medina, west of the beautiful shrine of Sidi-bel-Abbas. Near the ramparts, it is easily accessible by car, but only a few minutes stroll from fine restaurants and the hurly-burly of the tourist trail that leads to nearby monuments and the colorful souks on the way to Djemma el Fna square.

Dating back to around 1750, Riad Porte Royale has five bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Restored by master craftsmen, traditional finishes enhance the clean lines, and features such as the thick walls have been retained. In the luminous courtyard, the plunge pool mirrors the dramatic portico and the ancient ‘porte royale.’

Textiles, rugs, and objects d’art from the old caravan routes of Asia and Africa accent the white bedrooms. Elsewhere, there are several corners to relax in, from the b’hou off the courtyard, to the upstairs loggia with its fireplace and pretty window arches, or the tent on the roof terrace with a view of nearby palms.

Where possible Riad Porte Royale endeavors to be eco-friendly and provide sustainable services and accommodation in Marrakech.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square

Jemaa el-Fna Square by night in Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fnaa square UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most interesting places in Morocco. This centuries old meeting point of musicians, dancers, acrobats, snake charmers, etc… is indeed a spectacle by itself.

Don’t forget to visit this amazing place by night, maybe even go to the top of the nearby terrace cafes and enjoy an upper view of the square.

Djemaa el Fna offers you all types of drinks in the dozens of street cafes where you can relax and read your book and drink a coffee.

But, if you want to try the real thing, you should try fresh orange juice in one of many orange juice stalls.

You can also drink a hot mint tea, one of the things Morocco is famous for.
Also, if you want to warm yourself from the inside, you can drink of the local aphrodisiac tea selling on the small tea stalls facing the Koutoubia.

Djemaa el Fna square view from the top of CTM cafe is one of the best places to view the square from above. You have to pay or drink something to go inside.

The orange juice stalls in Djemaa el Fna in Marrakech are a must! Each orange juice costs around 3 Dirhams, so… why not to drink two glasses?!

From around 6:30 pm until late night, part of Djemaa el Fna square transforms itself into a temporary open-air restaurant with hundreds of small stall restaurants serving all types of food, if you want to find cheap restaurants in Marrakech this is the best solution.

These restaurants are one of the “must do” things about Marrakech. Try Aicha Restaurant Number 1. For those with strong stomach, maybe you can even try the smoky snail stalls. There are several people selling Moroccan pastries and cookies for 2 Dirhams.

Snake Charmers in Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech

Djemaa el Fnaa Snake Charmers in Marrakech are probably one of the most exotic show Djemaa el Fna has to offer.

This ancestral profession has lost its actual charm in Marrakech as snakes don’t dance to the sound of the pipes. Still, you can see some pretty dangerous snake species fooling around with the snake charmers.

Snake charmers tease real cobra snakes, which are actually out of venom and probably without teeth.
This is not OK in terms of animal rights, these snakes are exploited, venom emptied, and drugged just to please the visitors. Photos will be asked for money.

You will definitely not get bored at Djemaa el Fna. If you’re a music lover, you’ll be able to enjoy several musicians spread into different groups all along the square.

Tourist are asked for a small contribution, grab a couple of coins with you and you’ll be ok. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll get the exact day the acrobats will come to the city and you’ll enjoy a fantastic show with young boys doing some impressive acrobatics.

The bands of Djemaa el Fna street musicians perform local Berber music. You will probably be invited to sit and enjoy the music. Some coins expected.

Acrobats in Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech

Acrobats performing street stunts and acrobatics at Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakech is one of the most fantastic human show in the square.

Djemaa el Fna is full of people. Always. As a major tourist spot, Marrakech has lots of people which their job is to entertain you. Either those street water sellers, snake charmers, acrobats, monkey owners, henna women tattooists, etc…These people pass their lives in Djemaa el Fna just for you to enjoy the city and give it a certain exotic feeling.

Meet the Djemaa el Fna street snake charmer and musicians, the Gnawa street musicians and the street water seller for example. These are some of the many types of people you can actually meet in Djemaa el Fna main Square in Marrakech.

Water sellers in Marrakech Jemaa el-Fna Square

It has been like this for centuries, and, this special characteristic and many other, made it possible to Djemaa el Fna and Marrakech to be included into UNESCO World Heritage protection back in 1985. Meet the people, and expect to give some money in return if you make pictures of them (yes it least 10 Dirhams but never 100 Dirhams! Yes watch out those guys are tricky!).
