Riad Merstane

Marrakech is the most exotic city in Morocco, a fascinating urban theater situated within easy reach of the majestic High Atlas Mountains and the wild Atlantic coast.

Riad Merstane is an old house, situated in one of the most ancient districts of Marrakech-Medina, near the historic mosque of Sidi Bel Abbes, the patron saint of Marrakech. It is in a tranquil location at the end of a typical Medina alley and stands on the site of an old lunatic asylum once attached to the mosque. The area retains a local feel, with a flour mill, a local hammam and a small market near the riad. The riad is accessible by taxi and is an easy 15 minutes stroll to nearby monuments then through the chaotic souks to the vibrant heart of the city, Djemna el Fna square.

Riad Merstane was renovated to retain as many original features as possible and is decorated throughout with an interesting mix of local fabrics and handmade furniture, mostly sourced from the souks and local antiques markets. Many traditional finishes have been used throughout the riad, from carved woodwork and intricate metal work to hand made tiles and the five bedrooms are individually decorated, all with en suite shower rooms finished in polished taderlakt. Most have air conditioning/ heating and all bedding is smooth Egyptian cotton. There is a well stocked library, a good selection of board games and a CD player with an eclectic collection of CD’s.

Relax with a mint tea in the cosy salon in front of the olive wood fire or on the pretty roof terrace at sunset as the call to prayer echoes over the rooftops. There are panoramic views over the Medina to the snow covered High Atlas Mountains and a plant covered pergola with seating. Meals can be served on the candle lit terrace, in the pretty dining room or in the shady courtyard, filled with plants and birdsong.
