Photo Gallery of Koutoubia Mosque, Koutoubia 69 meters Minarete Tower, built during the reign of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur.
From all the images of Morocco to the outside, Koutoubia Mosque probably stands for the most well known. A visit to Marrakech will be intensely sighted upon this huge tower that seems to be always present.
Located right after Djemaa el-Fna main square in the city center, the 69 m (221 ft) high minaret tower was finished under the sovereignty of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur (1184-1199) and was later used as model for the tower Giralda in Seville and for the Hassan Tower in Rabat, nowadays the country’s capital.
On top of the tower are four copper globes that according to legend, were initially made of pure gold, and there were supposed to have been only three. The fourth was given by the wife of Yacoub el-Mansour as compensation for her failure to maintain the fast for one day during Ramadan. She had her golden jewellery melted down to get the fourth globe.
