Agadir is a city located in the Souss-Massa-Draâ Region Atlantic Coast, 250km south-west of Marrakesh.
Agadir is an important fishing and commercial port and the first sardine port in the world. Agadir is a popular seaside beach resort with a long sandy beaches that spread along the Atlantic. Agadir is not a typical Moroccan traditional city as is resembles more a southern European beach resort.
The word Agadir means in Tassousit language “Fortified Granary” and a visit to the city museum is a must as it features local Amazigh Berber culture.
During medieval times, there was only a fishing village there, Agadir el-arba`. In 1505 the Portuguese established a trading post named Santa Cruz do Cabo de Gué, under a governor. In 1541, the city came under Wattasid control and in 1572 a stronghold was built on the top of the hill overlooking the bay, the Kasbah that can today be visited and from where you can appreciate an amazing view of the port, the marina and the rest of the city.
