Olivier Patience, Dominik Hrbaty and Boris Pashanski were a trio of first-round winners Sunday at the $575,000 Grand Prix Hassan II, a clay-court French Open tuneup.
The first match of the day ended quickly, as Peter Luczak of Australia retired trailing 2-1 in the first set to Slovakia’s Hrbaty. Luczak called it quits due to right hamstring injury.
France’s Patience edged Brazil’s Marcos Daniel 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, in the second match on Court Central. The back-and-forth battle lasted just over two hours and 30 minutes.
In the final match of the day, Serbian Pashanski fought back to beat German Benjamin Becker 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The remaining 13 first-round matches will be completed on Monday. Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France highlights Monday’s play with his match against last year’s finalist Albert Montanes of Spain.
Paul-Henri Mathieu erased Montanes 6-1, 6-1 in last year’s Grand Prix Hassan II finale.
